Resurrection Catholic Cemetery was established in 1904 in the village of Justice, Illinois, during a period when Chicago’s Catholic population was rapidly expanding. Many Polish immigrants settled on the southwest side of Chicago and were served by the cemetery. The cemetery was created to provide a sacred burial ground rooted in Catholic traditions, offering families a permanent place of remembrance tied closely to their faith and heritage.
Situated along Archer Avenue, a historic roadway connecting Chicago to its surrounding rural communities, the cemetery quickly became a destination for families visiting loved ones. The road itself became closely tied to the identity of the cemetery, as generations traveled it for funerals, memorials, and quiet reflection. Over time, the surrounding area grew alongside the cemetery, with increased access and development supporting the steady flow of visitors.
Covering nearly 400 acres, Resurrection Cemetery developed into one of the largest Catholic cemeteries in the region. It holds well over 200000 burials and includes a wide range of sections, from traditional grave plots to landscaped memorial gardens. The grounds were carefully designed to reflect both spiritual significance and natural beauty, creating an environment meant for peace, prayer, and remembrance.
A major addition to the cemetery came in 1969 with the construction of the Resurrection Mausoleum. This structure became well known for its massive stained glass installation, which depicts a sweeping visual story from creation to the second coming. The artwork, composed of thousands of individual panels, stands as one of the most striking features within the cemetery and draws visitors for both its religious and artistic significance.
Through the decades, Resurrection Cemetery has remained an important cultural and spiritual landmark. It continues to serve families throughout the Chicago area while also standing as a historical site connected to the city’s immigrant past. Today, it is not only a place of burial but also a lasting symbol of community, faith, and the passage of time.

Stories & Folklore
Stories & Folklore are just that. Stories and personal accounts that have been reported about the location and passed down from generation to generation. This section could also contain research notes as well.
Resurrection Cemetery is most famously associated with the legend of Resurrection Mary, one of the most enduring ghost stories in American folklore. The story began circulating in the 1930s and centers on a young woman said to haunt Archer Avenue near the cemetery. Late-night drivers have reported encountering a quiet woman dressed in white who asks for a ride, only to mysteriously vanish as the vehicle approaches the cemetery gates.
According to the most commonly told version, the young woman had been attending a dance at a nearby ballroom when she became upset and left on foot. While walking along Archer Avenue, a vehicle struck her and killed her in a hit-and-run accident. She was later buried in Resurrection Cemetery, still wearing her white dress, and is said to return to the road searching for a way home.
Over the years, many witnesses have claimed direct encounters with the figure. Taxi drivers, local residents, and passersby have described picking her up, speaking with her, or even dancing with her before realizing something was wrong. In several accounts, she appears completely solid, only to disappear without warning, leaving behind confusion and fear.
Other reports connected to the cemetery include sightings of glowing figures near the gates and unusual activity around the iron fence. One of the most well-known claims involves mysterious handprints appearing on the metal bars, said to have been left by a spirit attempting to reach through. These stories have circulated for decades and continue to be shared among visitors and paranormal investigators.
Today, Resurrection Cemetery is considered one of the most haunted locations in the Chicago area. The stretch of Archer Avenue beside the cemetery remains a hotspot for sightings, particularly late at night. Whether viewed as legend or something unexplained, the story of Resurrection Mary continues to draw attention and curiosity from those seeking to experience the unknown.
