Long before paranormal stories spread beyond Berwyn, staff members reportedly noticed strange sounds in the building after closing time. Some said they heard footsteps in empty rooms, movement in the basement, or what sounded like activity downstairs when no one else was present. Another recurring report centered on a shadowy figure seen near the hallway and rear portion of the lounge. The bar itself became part of the legend. A handcrafted bar brought in from another local establishment was said to carry its own energy and history. Certain stools or spots along the counter were considered more active than others. Guests spoke of cold sensations, uneasy feelings, or playful disturbances while seated there. Whether haunted or simply atmospheric, Cigars and Stripes embraced the mystery and became known as one of Illinois' most talked about paranormal hangouts.
