History

History information is some background and history about the location. This is meant to be a basic summary. Below the history records you will find sources in which you can click on to find out more information. There may be multiple history records per location.

Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge became one of the most distinctive gathering spots along Ogden Avenue in Berwyn, Illinois. Positioned on the historic Route 66 corridor, the business blended the feel of a neighborhood tavern with a cigar lounge, live entertainment venue, and, later, a barbecue destination. Its location on one of America’s most famous highways helped give it a steady mix of locals, travelers, and curious visitors.

The building itself had already lived a long life before becoming the lounge. Like many commercial properties in older Chicago suburbs, it likely served changing uses through the decades as Berwyn developed from a streetcar suburb into a busy working-class community. Structures along Ogden Avenue often housed shops, taverns, and service businesses as automobile travel increased in the twentieth century.

When owner Ronnie Lottz established Cigars and Stripes, he built it around personality rather than corporate polish. The business became known for loud humor, eccentric décor, themed events, craft beer, cigars, and a rebellious independent style. Customers often described it as unlike any other place in the region.

Over time the lounge expanded its identity with smoked meats and barbecue, drawing food lovers in addition to regular bar patrons. The combination of dining, nightlife, comedy, music, and cigar culture made it a destination rather than simply a corner bar. It earned a reputation as a place where nearly anything could happen on a given night.

Its connection to Route 66 culture and old Berwyn character helped preserve a sense of roadside Americana. Visitors came for the food and atmosphere, but many also came because they had heard stories about the building itself. Those stories would become one of the most famous parts of Cigars and Stripes lore.

Stories & Folklore

Stories & Folklore are just that. Stories and personal accounts that have been reported about the location and passed down from generation to generation. This section could also contain research notes as well.

Long before paranormal stories spread beyond Berwyn, staff members reportedly noticed strange sounds in the building after closing time. Some said they heard footsteps in empty rooms, movement in the basement, or what sounded like activity downstairs when no one else was present. These early reports helped create the belief that unseen residents shared the property.

One of the most repeated stories involves objects moving without explanation. Bartenders and customers claimed bar tools shifted on their own, glasses rattled, and items changed places. A famous tale tells of keys that had gone missing, only to suddenly drop into view in front of witnesses. Whether a prank, a coincidence, or something stranger, the story became local legend.

Another recurring report centered on a shadowy figure seen near the hallway and rear portion of the lounge. Several patrons described a dark human-shaped form moving quickly past a doorway or slipping around a corner before vanishing. Because sightings came from different people at different times, believers argued that something genuine haunted the space.

Some stories connected the activity to people linked with the building’s past. One tale claimed a former patron died near the entrance years earlier and never truly left. Others believed an elderly woman connected to an earlier era remained in spirit, quietly watching over the property. Such stories are common in older businesses where generations of memories seem to linger.

The bar itself became part of the legend. A handcrafted bar brought in from another local establishment was said to carry its own energy and history. Certain stools or spots along the counter were considered more active than others. Guests spoke of cold sensations, uneasy feelings, or playful disturbances while seated there. Whether haunted or simply atmospheric, Cigars and Stripes embraced the mystery and became known as one of Illinois' most talked about paranormal hangouts.
