Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany, New York, began its long history as the Genesee County Poorhouse. On December 4, 1826, the Genesee County Board of Supervisors met in Bethany to establish a county facility for people who could not support themselves. A former stagecoach tavern near Bethany Center Road and Raymond Road was selected for the new institution. The Genesee County Poorhouse officially opened to residents on January 1, 1827. At the time, Bethany was near the geographical center of Genesee County, since Wyoming County had not yet been created.

The poorhouse became home to a wide variety of people who had few other places to turn. Residents included impoverished families, elderly people, widows, orphans, people with physical disabilities, people suffering from mental illness, alcoholics, and others considered unable to care for themselves. Some minor offenders and people judged to be troublesome were also housed there. Regardless of why they lived at the institution, residents were commonly referred to as inmates, a term routinely used by poorhouses during that era. In 1828, a stone building was constructed for the confinement of mentally ill residents and people who had been committed for misconduct.

The institution developed into a large, largely self sufficient poor farm covering more than 200 acres. Residents who were physically able were expected to work, and their labor helped keep the facility operating. The farm raised cattle, pigs, horses, chickens, and ducks, while fields and gardens produced vegetables and fruit. Food was preserved on the property, and the institution also operated a bakery and woodworking shop. Coffins were among the items produced in the woodworking shop, both for use at the poorhouse and for sale. The surrounding woods also supplied fuel and other resources needed by the institution.

Life at the County Home changed as attitudes toward poverty, mental illness, disability, and public welfare evolved. In 1887, county officials began transferring people suffering from acute mental illness to other institutions rather than keeping them at the poorhouse. The property nevertheless continued caring for elderly, disabled, impoverished, and dependent residents for generations. People died there throughout its long operation, and those without families or financial resources could be buried in a cemetery located on the property. The exact boundaries and burial locations of that cemetery eventually became uncertain as markers disappeared and the land changed.

The poor farm portion of the institution ceased operation in 1965, while the County Home continued serving residents for several more years. The Genesee County Nursing Home ultimately closed in 1974, and its remaining residents were transferred to newer facilities in Batavia. After nearly a century and a half of institutional use, the old buildings entered a very different chapter of their history. The property eventually became known as Rolling Hills Asylum and gained national attention for reports of paranormal activity. Today, its combination of historic architecture, institutional history, forgotten burials, and decades of reported unexplained experiences has made Rolling Hills one of the best known paranormal investigation locations in New York.

Ghost stories and folklore

Paranormal narrative section

The haunted reputation of Rolling Hills Asylum is closely connected to the enormous variety of people who passed through the institution during its long history. For generations, this was a place where society sent people who were poor, elderly, sick, disabled, mentally ill, orphaned, or otherwise unable to care for themselves. Some stayed briefly while others spent years of their lives there. Many died while under the care of the county. With a burial ground once located somewhere on the property and many graves no longer clearly marked, stories developed that some of the former residents never truly left.

One of the most famous spirits associated with Rolling Hills is Roy, a former resident remembered for his unusual height and association with gigantism. Roy has become one of the best-known personalities in the building's paranormal folklore. Investigators have reported strange activity in areas associated with him, including unexplained voices, noises, and unusual responses during attempts at spirit communication. Perhaps the most famous type of encounter connected with Roy is the appearance of an unusually tall shadow figure. Visitors have described seeing a dark humanlike shape that appears much taller than an average person, sometimes moving through doorways or standing at the end of corridors before disappearing.

Shadow figures are among the most frequently repeated claims at Rolling Hills. Visitors have described dark shapes crossing hallways, appearing in doorways, and moving through rooms when nobody else should be present. Some are described as ordinary human-sized figures, while others appear unusually tall. Investigators sometimes report seeing the movement only from the corner of their eyes, while others claim to have watched a dark figure remain visible for several seconds. Photographs and videos taken inside the building have also occasionally produced unexplained dark forms that were not noticed when the image was taken.

Disembodied voices are another major part of the building's reputation. Visitors have reported hearing whispers, conversations, cries, and individual words coming from apparently empty rooms. Some investigators claim that voices have answered questions during quiet sessions. Electronic voice recordings have reportedly captured words and phrases that investigators say were not heard at the time. Roy's room has been particularly associated with reported voice phenomena, with visitors describing recordings that appear to contain responses despite no visible person being nearby.

Footsteps are also commonly described throughout the building. Investigators have reported hearing someone walking along corridors or across floors above them, only to discover that the area was empty. Other reports describe the sound of something heavy being moved across a floor. In one reported experience, visitors heard what sounded like furniture being dragged on the floor above them. When the area was checked, they reportedly found no obvious person responsible for the noise and had not heard the footsteps that would normally accompany someone moving furniture.

The basement has developed its own collection of unsettling stories. Visitors have reported strange lights, shadowy movement, unexplained sounds, and the sensation that someone is nearby. One reported experience involved seeing a shimmering light in the basement without an obvious explanation. Others have described sudden feelings of discomfort or the impression that they were being watched from the darkness. The basement environment itself can be intimidating, but investigators continue to report experiences that they believe cannot be explained simply by the age and condition of the building.

Another recurring element of the Rolling Hills stories involves doors, knocks, bangs, and unexplained movement. Investigators sometimes report hearing knocking sounds that appear to respond to questions. Others describe doors moving without anyone touching them or sounds coming from rooms that have already been checked and found empty. Sudden bangs can echo throughout the old structure, making their exact location difficult to determine. For paranormal investigators, attempting to determine whether such noises come from the building itself or from something unexplained has become part of the challenge of investigating Rolling Hills.

Visitors have also described physical sensations that seem to occur without warning. Some report suddenly becoming extremely cold in particular rooms or hallways. Others describe feeling touched, brushed against, or having clothing tugged when nobody is standing close enough to do it. Feelings of being watched or followed are frequently reported as investigators move through the building. Some people describe these sensations as uncomfortable or threatening, while others report feeling that the unseen presence is simply curious.

One of the more emotional aspects of the folklore involves the children who once lived at the County Home. Orphans and dependent children were among the residents housed at institutions of this type, and stories of childlike spirits have become part of the paranormal tradition surrounding Rolling Hills. Investigators have reported hearing sounds resembling children, including faint voices and unexplained noises in areas where nobody is present. Some attempts at spirit communication have reportedly produced responses interpreted as coming from younger residents.

The former cemetery adds another layer to the mystery. Historical records establish that a burial ground existed for people who died at the County Home and had nobody to claim or bury them elsewhere. Over time, the cemetery deteriorated. Headstones disappeared, vegetation reclaimed portions of the land, and the exact arrangement of the graves was lost. Several old stones were eventually recovered, but the locations of many burials remain uncertain. The knowledge that former residents may still rest in largely unmarked graves has become inseparable from the property's haunted reputation.

Not every reported encounter at Rolling Hills is frightening. Some investigators describe the building as active rather than evil. They report voices, footsteps, shadows, and apparent interactions that seem more curious than threatening. Certain alleged spirits have even developed recognizable personalities through years of repeated investigations. Investigators sometimes return to the same rooms and attempt to communicate with the same presumed individuals, hoping to reproduce experiences from earlier visits.

Other encounters are considerably more unsettling. People have described dark figures watching them from hallways, footsteps approaching when nobody appears, voices emerging from empty rooms, and the overwhelming feeling that someone is standing immediately behind them. The enormous building can become extremely quiet, making an unexpected whisper, knock, or footstep particularly startling. For some visitors, the most disturbing experiences are not dramatic apparitions but small events that suggest they may not be alone.

Rolling Hills Asylum remains a place where documented history and modern folklore are deeply intertwined. Its reputation does not rest upon a single ghost story. Instead, it comes from decades of reported voices, shadows, footsteps, unexplained photographs, strange recordings, physical sensations, and personal encounters. Whether these experiences represent paranormal activity or mysteries created by an enormous aging building, Rolling Hills has developed one of the strongest supernatural reputations in western New York. For paranormal investigators, the possibility that former residents may still wander the corridors has transformed the old County Home into a place where its nineteenth-century past can sometimes feel remarkably close.
