This house was constructed about 1823 in New Haven, Connecticut. The floor plan was devised by the Webster family in consultation with a local builder. The home was arranged to accommodate two elderly people who found large, drafty rooms and stair climbing a hardship. Noah was nearly sixty five when he moved in, bringing his wife Rebecca, four of his seven children, and a free black servant.

In his New Haven, Connecticut home, Noah Webster wrote the first dictionary of the American English language. The house changed hands, serving as a private residence and dormitory for more than a century before coming to Greenfield Village in 1936.

Some strange things have occurred in and around this beautiful home since its relocation to Greenfield Village. In fact, I find this first story very interesting, for it's said that animals can sense, and even see, spirits:

"There were a few people from Firestone Farm going for a Sunday drive in one of the buggies with a very calm team of horses. Everything was going fine and the team was doing great. When they turned down Maple Lane, the horses came to a complete stop and refused to go past the Noah Webster house. The farmer driving the buggy tried and tried and finally got the horses to move. When they were right in front of the house, they spooked, bucked, and flew past the house and down Maple Lane. There was nothing around to spook them between the house and the road."

Here's another Webster story that borders on the very strange:

"It was a quiet fall evening at the end of the day, and a father and his two young children were looking through the house when he noticed the little ones were missing. The dad came downstairs and asked if the presenter had seen his kids because he couldn't find them. The presenter and the father both looked through the hallways and didn't see the children anywhere. They decided to look upstairs once again and there, standing in the hallway, were the youngsters. The dad asked where they were and the kids answered by stating they were in the bedroom talking to the man. There is a tall barrier and no other way into the bedroom, and of course no other man was up there!"

Former tour guides at Greenfield Village claim that Noah Webster's house is haunted. Reports include odd, unexplained noises, including crying and screaming, and ghostly apparitions.
