The farmland was acquired in 1841 by Henry Culp, and during the following 10 years he built a 2-story house, the barn and several outbuildings. During the battle of Gettysburg the farm buildings were highly visible from all vantage points east of the town, and the farm witnessed heavy fighting. One July 1-3, 1863, Confederate forces used the farm as a staging area for attacks on Union positions southwest of the farm.

Some believe that Wesley Culp was buried in the basement of this house after he died on the Gettysburg battlefield. This has not been proven, but if true it is possible that his spirit is haunting this property. Although Wesley was from Gettysburg, he fought for the Confederates and the people of Gettysburg considered him to be a traitor. The folklore says that Wesley’s sisters were told where his body laid on the battlefield and in the night they brought him to this building during the night and buried him in the basement of his uncle’s home.

The former park superintendent lived in this building with his family. One night, the superintendent, his wife two daughters and an off duty park ranger were downstairs when they heard someone running around upstairs. Thinking that it was an intruder, the radio for another ranger who was on duty to come and help them get the person out of the house.

Once the other ranger arrived, he instructed him to go around back and the superintendent and the off duty range ran upstairs to capture the person. Once they went upstairs they thought that the person ran outside and jumped from the balcony and took off in the woods.

Unfortunately, the ranger who was on duty was already at the back of the house and did not see anyone come out. After searching and searching, they found nobody.
